A Day of Moviegoing at AMC Theatres...

Just watched Tim Burton's first Batman film (which celebrated the 35th anniversary of its theatrical release last year) in Dolby earlier today!

I saw Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade on the big screen almost three months ago; the only other blockbuster that I watched in the summer of 1989 (I was 9 years old at the time) which needs to be re-released next is Ghostbusters II. I doubt that's gonna happen, though.

THE BATMAN PART II Script Is Complete!

We don't know how long the screenplay for Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II is, but what we do know is that the constantly-delayed sequel to 2022's The Batman is still targeting a release in theaters nationwide on October 1, 2027. Oh, and the interesting tidbit below. Stay tuned!

A New, Long-Awaited Category Will Soon Be Presented at the Academy Awards...

It was announced earlier today that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will soon have a new category to present at the Academy Awards a few years from now...for Best Stunt Design!

This award to recognize stunt performers in the filmmaking community has been years in the making, with the first Best Stunt Design Oscar to be presented in 2028—during the 100th Academy Awards ceremony.

Director David Leitch (who helmed 2024's The Fall Guy, 2022's Bullet Train and 2018's Deadpool 2) led the initiative on behalf of the stunt community to bring this new official Oscar category to fruition.

Can't wait to see who'll take home the first trophy for stunt design! This category will honor movies that will be released in 2027, so will Avengers: Secret Wars, The Batman: Part II and Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum be among the first nominees? Stay tuned.

A Consecutive Day of Moviegoing at AMC Theatres...

Happy Batman Day! Gettin' ready to once again watch The Dark Knight (which celebrated the 15-year anniversary of its theatrical release two months ago) on the big screen today!

The ticket is only $5 at AMC Theatres through next Wednesday, September 20.

So I just found out that Lady Gaga tweeted this picture (back on Valentine's Day) from next year's Joker: Folie à Deux...in which she'll appear as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck.

As recently been the case with Warner Bros' other DC Comics movies, Lady Gaga will portray Harley at the same time that Margot Robbie is playing the Joker's ex-girlfriend in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU)...specifically in the Suicide Squad films. Of course, I'm not sure if this is actually still the case—since James Gunn's shakeup of the DCEU might also mean that Robbie, just like Henry Cavill as Superman, won't be calling Joker "puddin" on the big screen anymore. I got mixed results after looking this up on Google!

Also, Robert Pattinson will reportedly begin filming The Batman: Part II this November, while Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck will both appear as the Dark Knight in this June's The Flash. Very amusing.

The image below is of Soundstage 16, which briefly served as holding for background actors when I worked at Warner Bros. Studios last fall and a month ago. I took tons of photos of this building...mostly because of that cool WB logo and not because I was initially unaware of the fact that this stage was where the pirate ship's cave scene in The Goonies was filmed!

Oh, and Joker: Folie à Deux is reportedly being shot inside Soundstage 16 as well! Happy Friday.

Movie Review - ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA...

So I watched Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania at Regal Cinemas yesterday, and needless to say, Marvel Studios is really starting to prove Martin Scorsese right!

Scorsese once pointed out that superhero films, particularly those by Marvel, were more like amusement park rides instead of proper cinematic experiences, and the third Ant-Man movie proved that.

Quantumania was an entertaining flick—with Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer once again commendable in their established roles, along with newcomers Kathryn Newton and Jonathan Majors (as the villainous Kang the Conqueror)—but it stopped right there as the film was somewhat deliberate in its attempt to be a typical CGI-ridden superhero movie...filled with banality and playing it safe with its plot.

While it's understandable that computer-generated imagery was needed to bring the Quantum Realm to life in Ant-Man 3 (just like in the two previous installments and 2019's Avengers: Endgame), the visual effects in this movie felt even more artificial than what you saw in last year's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. I really wanted to like Quantumania, but I couldn't help but yawn and become bored in the first act of the film before Kang finally stepped onto the scene.

As for Kang, Majors' portrayal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) next Thanos-level antagonist was well-done. (Spoilers ahead) I just wished that Kang killed one of the major characters (he only vanquished a bunch of movie extras running away from him) and escaped through that portal in the climax. Of course, the mid-credits scene at the end shows that there will be more than enough Kangs to be a threat to the Avengers once these bad guys arrive on the scene in future MCU movies!

So yea— Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania could've been better. I would say that I'm looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 this May, but I'm annoyed by what Guardians director James Gunn has done to the DC Extended Universe during his new tenure at Warner Bros. studios.

Henry Cavill is no longer Superman? The Batman Beyond live-action film was cancelled? We'll never see Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam show up in a Shazam! movie? How dare you, Gunn!

"I'M BATMAN." And My Most-Anticipated Movie of This Summer Is...

So Super Bowl LVII has come and gone, with the Kansas City Chiefs winning their second NFL championship in four years, and all I can say is— Bring on The Flash!

The TV spot for the upcoming DC Comics movie was aired during the Big Game today...alongside the commercials for other highly-anticipated summer flicks like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Let's party like it's 1989! Considering the fact that 34 years later, Michael Keaton is donning the Batcowl and Harrison Ford is sporting a fedora and whip once more...

Oh, and I'm also stoked to see Ezra Miller return as the Scarlet Speedster despite Miller's real-world legal issues (Google it), Ben Affleck as the DC Extended Universe's version of Batman (one final time, supposedly) and Sasha Calle as Supergirl in The Flash.

The 2023 Academy Award Nominations...

Congratulations to all of the movies, filmmakers and thespians who received an Oscar nomination this morning by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences! The winners will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards that will be televised March 12 on ABC TV.

As shown below, Everything Everywhere All at Once (which I saw at the theater last April and immensely enjoyed) leads the Best Picture pack with 11 nominations. Top Gun: Maverick—which I saw multiple times at the theater last year—is up for 6 trophies; it unfortunately isn't up for Best Cinematography but is amazingly up for Best Adapted Screenplay!

One actor who I hoped would get nominated was John Boyega for his role as a down-on-his-luck Marine veteran in last August's Breaking. I gave this dramatic crime thriller an enthusiastic review last summer, and I was hoping that the Academy would give this movie the kudos it deserves... Next time, Boyega.

And up for Best Visual Effects for 2022 is Top Gun: Maverick, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman (which should've also been nominated for Best Original Score), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water. Yes, James Cameron's sequel to the 2009 sci-fi epic will go home with the trophy.

Can't wait to watch the Oscars on March 12!

Movie Review: SMILE...

Earlier today, I watched the Parker Finn-helmed horror film Smile at AMC theaters.

Needless to say, this movie was intense to watch and had lots of jump scares! But in terms of being frightening enough to keep me up at night, Smile is too high-concept a thriller to scare audiences the way a classic horror flick like The Exorcist would.

Smile is a cautionary tale about how individuals struggling with depression continue to be ostracized in this day and age, and how folks coping with mental illness can be severely misunderstood by other people.

That being said, Smile is also about a mysterious monster who gets inside people, makes them grin like the Joker from Batman and then causes them to kill themselves in the worst way possible! Any unlucky person who witnessed that victim commit suicide ended up being targeted by that monster next.

As mentioned earlier, this concept—while definitely very original—is too fancy a premise to make anyone but young children afraid to go to bed at the end of the day. Smile's invisible, grin-inducing creature is just like Pennywise from the IT movies... In regards to those Stephen King flicks, I don't think that adult moviegoers worried about some interdimensional creature disguising itself as a clown before preying on them once they left the multiplex!

The Exorcist, on the other hand, was simply about a girl who was possessed by a demon (a scenario that freaks me out having been raised as a Catholic)...which is why I've never viewed this film.

So bottom line is, Smile is a great horror flick to watch, but not to be traumatized by once the end credits rolled.

Speaking of the ending (no spoilers here): Depending on how Smile does at the box office this weekend, I really won't be surprised if Paramount Pictures greenlights a sequel...which I'll totally see! Happy First Day of October.

On This Day in 2012: Remembering THE DARK KNIGHT RISES...

It was 10 years ago today that director Christopher Nolan brought his Batman trilogy to an epic close with The Dark Knight Rises.

It didn't become a classic like 2008's The Dark Knight, but the final film was still a critical and box office hit—despite the horrible event that occured at a Dark Knight Rises midnight screening in Aurora, Colorado a decade ago today. Real-world tragedy aside, it felt pretty somber to watch the Caped Crusader (Christian Bale) taking on an immensely formidable opponent (Bane, played by Tom Hardy) in a Nolan flick for the last time.

I watched The Dark Knight Rises for the first time on the big screen at Universal Cinema AMC in Hollywood...where one of the camouflaged Tumblers used by Bane's forces was on display in the outdoor plaza. For more images that I took of this awesome vehicle back in 2012, visit my webpage below!

Movie Review - JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION...

So I watched the sixth and supposedly final film in the Jurassic Park franchise this evening, and needless to say, I can see why Colin Trevorrow was removed from his directing gig on Star Wars: Episode IX years ago!

Jurassic World: Dominion had a convoluted storyline, and its use of nostalgia (with Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum returning as Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Dr. Ian Malcolm in this movie) was not half as effective as what Tom Cruise and Co. pulled off in Top Gun: Maverick.

While I'm comparing Dominion to the Top Gun sequel, the two are the complete opposite of each other (overlooking the obvious fact that one flick is about fighter jets and the other about giant ancient reptiles): Maverick had great editing, great music and a clear and coherent storyline. Dominion didn't have any of those.

(But at least Dominion was shot on celluloid! It employed Panavision cameras using Kodak film... I appreciate that old-school creative decision.)

Dominion also had laughable plot points and moments—such as the CIA somehow being responsible for monitoring dinosaurs around the world, and Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard's characters not caring to help Grant, Sattler and Malcolm out of that overturned Jeep in the movie's third act. Or was that still the second act? Can't tell... The story was convoluted.

Also, it's unfortunate that I can't remember any memorable motifs (other than the classic Jurassic Park theme) in Michael Giacchino's music score for Dominion. Oh well. At least he has other recent films like The Batman to be proud of.

Time to watch Top Gun: Maverick at the theater again to remove the overall bitter taste I have from Jurassic World: Dominion! That is all.

Movie Review: DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS...

Yesterday, I went to Harkins Theatres to watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) latest Phase 4 movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Just like its 2016 predecessor Doctor Strange, this sequel was cerebral and action-packed...and loaded with tons of mind-blowing visual effects. After playing the Master of the Mystic Arts for six MCU movies now (including this one), Benedict Cumberbatch has clearly nailed this role down—which obviously doesn't come as a surprise considering that he's a 2-time Academy Award nominee.

In regards to the story, The Multiverse of Madness continues the events that transpired in last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Disney+ streaming series, WandaVision. Doctor Strange has to deal with the repercussions of opening the multiverse in his attempt to help Peter Parker make the world forget that he's Spider-Man, while also dealing with the threat posed by Wanda Maximoff (superbly played by Elizabeth Olsen)...who'll destroy anything and anyone who gets in her way of reuniting with her two children from Westview.

It must've been intense for the people who watched WandaVision last year to see how her character turned out in The Multiverse of Madness. (I only viewed spoilers for this series online.) Wanda is the most powerful person to fight on the Avengers, and she became even more powerful—and extremely terrifying—as Scarlet Witch. Despite what transpired at the end of the movie, I'm darn sure that we'll see Wanda again in the future.

The rest of the cast was superb...with Rachel McAdams returning as Dr. Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong reprising his role as Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, and Chiwetel Ejiofor playing Strange's arch-nemesis Baron Mordo once more. Xochitl Gomez was commendable in her role as the multiverse-crossing America Chavez, while the actors who made surprise cameos (I'll just list John Krasinski and Hayley Atwell here) were fantastic—pun intended—in their appearances as well.

Danny Elfman's music score for The Multiverse of Madness wasn't exactly as memorable as his work on director Sam Raimi's first two Spider-Man films and Tim Burton's two Batman movies, but that shouldn't come as a surprise since the MCU isn't really known for orchestral scores that you can play over and over on MP3.

It was refreshing to see Raimi helm another Marvel movie once more. Of course, it's not a true Raimi film without his good friend and Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell—who had a cameo in each installment of Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy—making a quick but hilarious appearance in The Multiverse of Madness as well!

I look forward to Doctor Strange's next adventure on the big screen. Happy Mother's Day!

THE BATMAN: Movie Review, Pt. 2...

This is the first time I posted a second blog entry that's a continuation of a recent movie review, but just thought I'd provide a quick addendum to my observations about The Batman two days ago.

I watched the Matt Reeves flick at AMC theater for the second time yesterday, and my notes about Riddler (Paul Dano) were totally inaccurate. SPOILERS AHEAD: It was indeed Edward Nashton who committed all of those murders himself, while his followers were prompted to action only after Nashton posted one last video online prior to turning himself in to the police after killing Carmine Falcone.

This shows that Nashton is absolutely ruthless...and is as brutal as Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight. Just like the Joker in Nolan's best Batman film, Nashton has the persona to attract other like-minded psychopaths to carry out his bidding even when he himself has been taken out of action.

Well done, Dano and Reeves! To end this entry, here's my favorite line from The Batman:

"They think that I'm hiding in the shadows. But I am the shadows."

Also, I ended up buying The Batman's music score on compact disc since the MP3s were unavailable to download from Amazon last night. Lookin' forward to The Batman 2!

Movie Review: THE BATMAN...

Earlier today, I watched The Batman in IMAX at my local AMC theater. Despite the nearly 3-hour running time, Matt Reeves' cinematic take on the Dark Knight is one of the best iterations of the Caped Crusader yet!

Seeing as how this story takes place about two years after Bruce Wayne first began to don the bat cowl, it's understandable that he would still be moody as a billionaire playboy and the masked vigilante bent on seeking vengeance against the criminals of Gotham City for the death of his parents. Robert Pattinson's performance as Wayne and his armored alter ego was perfect for this version of Batman.

In regards to the main villain, Riddler, this is where The Batman falls short of the best pre-DCEU (DC Extended Universe) bat flick, The Dark Knight. Whereas Heath Ledger's Joker was present at all the major attacks on Gotham in the 2008 film (the opening bank heist, the attempted attack on Harvey Dent at Wayne Tower, the attempted assassination of Gotham's mayor during Commissioner Loeb's funeral, the second attack on Dent inside that SWAT vehicle and the destruction of Gotham General Hospital), Paul Dano's Edward Nashton (the real person behind Riddler) only appeared in the third act of the film.

SPOILER ALERT: It appears that the Riddler who committed all of those murders were actually the followers of Edward Nashton...not Nashton himself. This puts The Batman's version of Riddler on par with Ghostface from the Scream movies. Different people wore the mask of this serial killer in each installment of the hit slasher franchise, as opposed to a singular person causing mayhem. This is why Ledger's Joker will remain as the best Batman movie villain for a while.

In terms of the rest of the cast, it was stellar. Andy Serkis gave an understated performance as Alfred Pennyworth, Zoë Kravitz was more sultry and badass as Selina Kyle than Anne Hathaway was in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, Colin Farrell was unrecognizable (in a good way) as Oz...aka the Penguin, John Turturro was menacingly calm and collected as mobster Carmine Falcone, and Jeffrey Wright gave a valiant portrayal of Lt. James Gordon—just like Gary Oldman did as Gordon in the Christopher Nolan movies before him.

Focusing on the music, Michael Giacchino's excellent score for The Batman was just as bombastic and moody as those of Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard in The Dark Knight trilogy. In fact, I reckon that I will be ordering The Batman's orchestral score on MP3 (through Amazon) sometime this weekend!

[My laptop computer is so old (I bought it back in June of 2013) that its CD-ROM player is no longer working properly. That's why I won't buy The Batman's music score on compact disc, unfortunately.]

So once again, The Batman is an excellent addition to Warner Bros' long-running film franchise. I don't know how it will do at the box office over the long term, as I'm sure that there will be a lot of moviegoers who walk out during the film due to its epic running time, but one thing's for sure: I intend on watching The Batman at the theater again and appreciate how Matt Reeves did justice to the Caped Crusader.

Also— It may not be the Tumbler from the Nolan movies, but the new Batmobile is still pretty badass! Happy Friday.

Only three days till I watch The Batman on an IMAX screen at my local AMC theater! I'll be viewing the highly-anticipated, Matt Reeves-directed Caped Crusader flick at a 12 PM screening this Friday.

Unlike with Star Wars and the Transformers films, I have no intention of spoiling myself by reading the reviews for The Batman before March 4. I hope I'll be as blown away by this flick as I was with The Dark Knight in the summer of 2008.

So says Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) of the Bat-Signal that beckons him to be the hero that Gotham deserves in next year's The Batman.

Check out the newest preview for the Matt Reeves-directed film—which is about the Dark Knight Detective's quest to uncover a nefarious plot being hatched by Edward Nygma (Paul Dano) in Gotham City.

The Batman also brings in other classic foes such as Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) and Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), as well as allies like Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and trusty sidekick Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis).

Just like with every other Batman film (well, except 1997's Batman & Robin), I'm absolutely stoked for The Batman! Not just because of the amazing cast and the gritty look of this movie, but also because of the cool music score that Michael Giacchino composed for the upcoming Bat flick!

I definitely plan to get The Batman's music score on compact disc next year...and yes, I still buy CDs.

The Batman arrives in theaters nationwide on March 4, 2022.

Remembering MY STEPMOTHER IS AN ALIEN...

Overlooking the fact that this 1988 comedy flick is only 19% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, just thought I'd reminisce about My Stepmother Is an Alien here!

Back when I was young, I developed a huge crush on Kim Basinger after watching Tim Burton's first Batman movie (where Basinger played photojournalist Vicki Vale) at the theater in 1989. So of course, I had to rent [or should I say, I asked my parents to rent (which, in hindsight, is really awkward)] My Stepmother Is an Alien on VHS afterwards.

I was so mesmerized by Basinger's role as extraterrestrial vixen Celeste Martin that My Stepmother was probably one of the things that enhanced my obsession in space exploration (eventually leading me to create a blog devoted to human spaceflight 20 years later). So much so, that there was one night where I stood outside my house, looked up into the sky, and wished that there was a beautiful blonde alien woman lurking somewhere among the stars...

Keep in mind that I was only 10 at the time!

With 4,834 confirmed exoplanets in the universe as of September 1, it's not farfetched to think that a celestial being that looks like Vicki Vale could be living on a world hundreds of light-years away. Or maybe it is.

Movie Review: THE SUICIDE SQUAD...

Several hours ago, I went to my local AMC theater to watch The Suicide Squad...the newest cinematic installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

Needless to say, The Suicide Squad was very entertaining! Unlike 2016's Suicide Squad—whose original dark tone was minimized with humor added at the last minute, as a response to backlash caused by the dreariness of that year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice—The Suicide Squad already had a nice blend of humor, gore and emotional elements in it thanks to director James Gunn, who previously saw comic book movie success at Marvel Studios with 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG) and its 2017 sequel.

The biggest strengths of The Suicide Squad were the cast members and their amazing performances. Margot Robbie was back as the energetically unstable Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman returned as the stoic Colonel Rick Flag, Jai Courtney (briefly) reprised his role as Captain Boomerang, and the ultra-talented Viola Davis once again played the tough-as-nails but conniving Amanda Waller.

The newcomers in The Suicide Squad were commendable too...with Michael Rooker (who already worked with Gunn on the GotG movies) as Savant, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Flula Borg as Javelin, Mayling Ng as Mongal, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Sean Gunn (James' brother and another GotG veteran) as Weasel, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Julio Cesar Ruiz as Milton, Alice Braga as Sol Soria and Sylvester Stallone (who appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) as the voice of King Shark.

And of course, The Suicide Squad's badass group of villains-turned-heroes was led by the formidable Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and John Cena as the ironically-named Peacemaker.

The Suicide Squad was filled with lots of awesome and equally-violent action sequences, with the final confrontation pitting Bloodsport, Harley Quinn and Co. against Starro the Conqueror highlighting the delightfully-absurd nature of James Gunn's take on this DC comic book property.

Along with the 2017 Wonder Woman movie, 2019's Shazam and Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League earlier this year, The Suicide Squad is an excellent addition to the DCEU. Even though it won't be connected to DC's cinematic universe, here's hoping that 2022's The Batman will be as well-made as the films mentioned above. Godspeed, Warner Bros.

On This Day in 2011: Remembering SUCKER PUNCH...

Two years before Zack Snyder inaugurated the DC Extended Universe with 2013's Man of Steel, his fantasy-action flick Sucker Punch arrived in theaters nationwide. Today marks a decade since I watched this movie at the multiplex. Sucker Punch is an interesting film...which is basically about a character (played by Emily Browning) who resorts to losing herself in an alternative reality while being forced to commit demoralizing acts at a facility where she is being institutionalized by her abusive stepfather. In her fantasies, the girl—known as Babydoll—pictures herself fighting against the forces of evil alongside other women (portrayed by Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung and Abbie Cornish) who are also being held at the facility.

Sucker Punch is a pretty dark, trippy and stylized film...which, of course, would be a nice preview of what was to come as Snyder was years away from directing an ensemble movie featuring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and other DC Comics superheroes. That is all.

Photos of the Day: Images from the SNYDER CUT...

Happy Monday, everyone! Just thought I'd share these screenshots from Zack Snyder's Justice League after I watched it on HBO Max yesterday (yes, in just one viewing). I actually enjoyed Joss Whedon's 2017 theatrical version of Justice League, so I was obviously very impressed by Snyder's 4-hour iteration of the DC Extended Universe's (DCEU) second ensemble film (after 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). So what did I think of the new cut, you ask? My notes:

- Resume development of Justice League 2...and re-hire Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman, immediately! And give Snyder a raise.

- Even though this was made possible primarily due to the Snyder Cut's 'R' rating, the way that Steppenwolf was defeated in this version is way more satisfying than his downfall in Whedon's film. To be blunt: Steppenwolf went out like a total b***h while Superman arrived like a boss in the Snyder Cut's climax.

- (Spoiler Alert) If Wonder Woman 3 has a villain who's remotely worthy of getting decapitated by Diana Prince's sword like in the Snyder Cut, then this sequel will be a huge improvement on Wonder Woman 1984!

And again:

- Bring back Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel and Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight, respectively. Zack Snyder revealed in Justice League that there is so much potential for the DCEU if future movies are made based on what Snyder conveyed in his latest comic book epic. Carry on.
