Happy Veterans Day to my fellow Yanks! Gettin' ready to watch The Marvels today...

Quick Review: CANDYMAN...

A few hours ago, I watched the horror film Candyman...an update on the 1992 original and a directorial piece by rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (who helmed 2018's Little Woods and will direct the 2022 Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels).

Candyman was not only a horror movie, but DaCosta's interesting take on police brutality, urban gentrification and the yearning of aspiring (and struggling) artists to find motivation for their next showpiece.

I never saw the 1992 original film, but I'm familiar enough with it to know that that was a nice callback at the ending of the newest cinematic iteration of Candyman. SPOILER ALERT: Daniel Robitaille makes a guest appearance. That is all.

Quick Review: CAPTAIN MARVEL...

So a few hours ago, I watched Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios' first film release of 2019, and the theatrical precursor to next month's Avengers: Endgame—and here are my notes:

- I like how the opening Marvel logo honors the late and great Stan Lee. I was wondering how the first Marvel Studios release since Lee's passing last year would honor the legendary Marvel creator...

- I like the twists in the film (especially in regards to Mar-Vell's true identity) and how Carol Danvers getting her powers is obviously different from what the trailers showed us...

- I like how Captain Marvel fully explains why Nick Fury created The Avengers Initiative (and of course, why he wears that eye patch)—though this contradicts the 2011 Captain America flick being titled Captain America: The First Avenger...when he apparently wasn't (at least in regards to who motivated Fury to come up with the name for this SHIELD program in the first place; Steve Rogers was still buried in Arctic ice at the time)!

- The Avengers: Endgame-related end credits scene is reason enough to see this movie again! Along with Brie Larson, Lashana Lynch and company being such badasses in this film. Happy International Women's Day!

Quick Review: APOLLO 11...

Earlier today, I saw the Todd Douglas Miller-directed documentary Apollo 11 in IMAX at an AMC Theatre in Orange County, CA. All I can say is, moon landing hoaxers and conspiracy theorists in general need to watch this film ASAP. Lots of never-before-seen footage and photos taken during the 8-day mission almost 50 years ago provide compelling evidence that "one giant leap for mankind" was indeed made on July 20, 1969...and three astronauts, along with 400,000 folks at various NASA centers around America, made this amazing feat happen.

The last day to watch Apollo 11 in IMAX at mainstream movie theaters is tomorrow (to clear the way for Captain Marvel's arrival the next day), but the film opens in wide release this Friday, March 8. Watch this movie when it does!

The CAPTAIN MARVEL Teaser Poster and Trailer are Here!

Earlier today, Marvel Studios began the hype machine for its next film (before Avengers 4) when it unveiled the teaser poster and trailer for Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. As anticipated, the new preview gave us a glimpse of a young Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and two-eyed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), as well as Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), Carol Danvers' (Larson) teammates on her Starforce military team (including Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, seen below), the shape-shifting Skrulls and of course, Captain Marvel in her signature red, blue and gold suit. And if you stare closely at the poster above, you'll see Chewie the Cat—Danvers' furry extraterrestrial companion in the comic books—lurking in that hangar's shadow (towards the lower-left side of the image). Can't wait to see how this alien feline steals the show next year!

Captain Marvel arrives in theaters nationwide on March 8, 2019.

Photos of the Day: Revealing CAPTAIN MARVEL!

Earlier today, Entertainment Weekly (EW) released new photos showcasing next March's newest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Captain Marvel. Along with getting our first glimpse of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) in her red and blue superhero outfit (as well as the green Kree suit that she wears while fighting for an alien mercenary group known as Starforce), we also got promotional stills of Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau (mother of Monica Rambeau...who originally referred to herself as Captain Marvel before going by the names of Photon and Spectrum, respectively). EW also unveiled images of a young, two-eyed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as well as Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace)...who made their on-screen debuts in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy.

With the release of Captain Marvel about six months away (on March 8), we should also be getting a teaser trailer for this highly-anticipated film soon. Marvel president Kevin Feige has also hinted that the title for next April's Avengers 4 may be revealed not too long after we get our first footage of Carol Danvers in action. So as 2018 comes to a close, an exciting time awaits comic book fans as we should be getting previews and new info about two movies that mark the end of the first 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the beginning of the next decade of MCU flicks! Can't wait.

Godzilla, King Kong and the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

So how many of my fellow comic book/film geeks realized that not only did Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) co-star in Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla movie, but Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) both appeared in last year's Kong: Skull Island...which is set in the same cinematic universe as Godzilla (leading to the King of the Monsters and the Giant Gorilla confronting each other in 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong)?

Apparently, if you want to speculate about who the next actor and actress will be to star in the MCU, just watch a monster flick that Warner Bros. (the studio that owns the American film rights to Godzilla and King Kong) churns out in the future! Carry on.

Image of the Day: Getting Ready for CAPTAIN MARVEL...

Even though this poster is fan-made (I stumbled upon it online), it totally makes me stoked to watch Captain Marvel when it hits theaters nationwide on March 8, 2019! We'll see what the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most powerful heroine (played by Oscar winner Brie Larson) has in store for Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet next year. And yes, I plan on watching Avengers: Infinity War at the theater again (I saw it last Saturday at a matinee screening). I have my tix for the 10:40 AM showing at AMC Theatres this Saturday. Carry on!

Photos of the Day: Meet CAPTAIN MARVEL!

Just thought I'd share these pics giving us our first look at Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. In the images above and below, Larson is wearing a green suit that is speculated to have been taken from a Kree warrior named Mar-Vell, who will be played by Jude Law in the movie. (You'll know who the Kree are if you're a regular viewer of the Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., on ABC TV) And in the last two photos of this entry is the Oscar-winning actress wearing a flight suit as she boards an F-15 Eagle fighter jet at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Awesome stuff.



Lookin' forward to Captain Marvel when it hits theaters nationwide on March 8, 2019. And of course, I can't wait to see Carol Danvers join Captain America and Co. in the fourth, currently-untitled Avengers film that arrives in cinemas less than two months later...on May 3. I hope Brie Larson will be as bad-ass a heroine as Gal Gadot was in Wonder Woman! That is all.

Photo of the Day: Doing Research on CAPTAIN MARVEL...

I'm a huge fan of Academy Award winner Brie Larson after watching her Oscar-nominated film Room last year and seeing her in person when I did background acting work on 2014's The Gambler, so it's cool to see her getting to know the character that she'll play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe a few years from now. Captain Marvel doesn't hit theaters till March 8, 2019 (meaning that she probably won't appear in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War but in the 2019 untitled Avengers flick), but it obviously doesn't hurt to see the star of the movie getting prepped for her role this early on. Happy Monday!
