On This Day in 2002: My Student Film Version of THE BROKEN TABLE Is Put on Celluloid...

Talking to my lead actor as my lead actress looks on during the student film shoot for THE BROKEN TABLE...on October 18, 2002.

It was 20 years ago today that my nine crew members from Cal State Long Beach and I met up at a classmate's house in Fullerton, CA, to shoot my student film version of The Broken Table (TBT)!

Unlike the remake of TBT that was shot over three days almost three years ago, this version only had one day to be filmed. In fact, I was only given four hours to shoot a two-minute film as the main assignment for my FEA 336 class in college! I finished in about two hours...though I could've used the rest of that time to film more coverage for The Broken Table.

The lack of coverage was one of the reasons why I would reshoot TBT over 17 years later. Another reason is TBT still being my favorite of four films that I shot at Cal State Long Beach during film school—due to it having a smooth production shoot and also the fact that my cast and crew on this project were very fun to work with!

I've included behind-the-scenes pics in this entry featuring highlights from the postproduction process for The Broken Table. Most filmmakers today use computer software such as Adobe Premiere, Avid, Final Cut Pro and Lightworks (which is what I employed on the 2019 version of TBT) to bring their works to life; my film teacher had us use old-school (very old-school) equipment such as a Steenbeck flatbed to edit our projects. Pretty gnarly!

And at the very bottom of this entry is a side-by-side comparision showing how the 2002 version of TBT is both similar and different to the project that I shot three years ago. A random bit of trivia: The same screwdriver was used in both films!

THE BROKEN TABLE Update: It's a Wrap!

The final film festival scorecard for THE BROKEN TABLE.

With the final event that it was an Official Selection in (the Doge Film Festival, which occurred in New York City last week) now in the books, it's safe to say that The Broken Table's festival run is now complete!

Much thanks to the 31 film festivals that made The Broken Table an Official Selection and Award Winner. This wouldn't have been possible without the amazing cast and crew members who made this project happen!

Happy Thursday.

Another Selection for THE BROKEN TABLE!

A poster for THE BROKEN TABLE.

I just found out via email today that The Broken Table is a Semi-Finalist at the Phoenix Shorts Film Festival! This amazing event usually takes place at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts in Ontario, Canada—with the actual screening originally scheduled for January 25.

Unfortunately, the Ontario government has put in place new COVID-19 restrictions (which were active since January 5) in response to the Omicron variant...and will last till at least January 26.

It should be on January 26 when I find out if The Broken Table was upgraded to an Award Winner! It'll be cool if it is...but I'm already happy that my short film is considered a finalist.

There are still 27 other festivals that I need to hear from! Happy Thursday.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Holding a printout of the certificate that I received for THE BROKEN TABLE from the Cult Movies International Film Festival last month.

Just thought I'd begin the first day of 2022 by sharing this image of me holding a printout of the certificate that I received from the Cult Movies International Film Festival last month. Hopefully, there'll be more awards to come for The Broken Table over the course of this year...as I submitted my short film to 37 film festivals in December alone!

We'll see what happens. As the film's poster below indicates, I don't think I'll have space to put laurels for that many festivals on it, anyway! Not to sound cocky, heh.

With that being said, have a nice New Year's Day...and hopefully you guys won't break your New Year's resolutions too soon! Carry on.

THE BROKEN TABLE Film Festival and Awards Update!

The main poster for THE BROKEN TABLE.

As of today, The Broken Table has been selected by seven film festivals...the most recent being the Beyond the Curve International Film Festival! Click on this link to see its inclusion on BCIFF's cool Wall of Fame page.

I would also like to announce that my short film is currently the recipient of three awards: one for Best Seven Minute Film by the EdiPlay International Film Festival, another for Best Short Thriller by the Cult Movies International Film Festival and the last one being for Best Cinematography—which honors The Broken Table's talented director of photography, Brandon Cabral. This certificate was also awarded by Cult Movies Fest.

There are over two dozen additional festivals that I submitted to who I'm also waiting to hear from! It won't be till late summer or early fall of next year where all of them will have decided whether or not my short psychological thriller is included on their program schedules.

But as of right now, I'm already grateful that seven festivals have shown my film recognition and given accolades to it! A huge thank you to them... Happy Tuesday.

EDIT: While I was typing this blog entry, I just received word via e-mail that the Krimson Horyzon International Film Festival is the eighth event to select The Broken Table! Wonderful news! I will be using a different poster to apply this fantastic festival's laurel to it soon.

And the accolades just keep on coming! I am thrilled to announce that The Broken Table is now an Official Selection by the Red Moon Film Festival and the Cult Movies International Film Festival.

The Red Moon festival was the first event to notify me about my film's selection earlier today (even though the online screening won't take place till December 29 and 30), while the great news about the Cult Movies festival arrived in my inbox a few hours later. This online event will occur on December 24.

There are so many other festivals that I still need to hear from, but I'm stoked that The Broken Table currently has four selections under its belt!
