Movie Review: COCAINE BEAR...

The theatrical poster for COCAINE BEAR.

Earlier today, I watched the new Elizabeth Banks-directed dark comedy Cocaine Bear at AMC theaters.

This was actually my second time viewing this film...as I was lucky enough to attend a private test screening of Cocaine Bear back in November of last year.

So now that the comedy which is loosely based on the true story of an actual black bear that overdosed on a duffel bag full of cocaine in 1985 is finally out in theaters, all I can say is, Cocaine Bear was a hoot!

Unsurprisingly, there were no changes made to the movie since that test screening (apart from the final music score and the addition of end credits), and that's because Cocaine Bear was perfect the way it was. Who cares about the current 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes? I don't.

The cast was astounding—from the late Ray Liotta playing a drug kingpin named Sydney White to Keri Russell portraying Sari, a single mom in Georgia who's determined to find her daughter Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) after she played hooky from school to paint waterfalls in the forest.

Alden Ehrenreich went from being Han Solo (in Solo: A Star Wars Story five years ago) to playing Eddie...the level-headed son of Sydney White, while O'Shea Jackson Jr. portrayed Daveed—Eddie's unofficial best friend who's bent on finding the bags of cocaine in the forest while not messing up his spiffy new shoes and sports jersey as he did so.

Margo Martindale was great as Liz, a Georgia park ranger who had the hots for Peter (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), a wildlife expert who—as the movie's trailer showed—died a very horrific death at the paws of the coked-up bear.

Isiah Whitlock Jr. played Bob, a no-nonsense Tennessee detective whose two goals in life were to locate the cocaine while looking for the perfect dog to adopt and play with at the same time. Ayoola Smart, who somewhat resembled Jennifer Lawrence in this movie, portrayed Officer Reba...Bob's subordinate who was both loyal (by looking over Bob's adorable canine Rosette while he was gone searching for the coke) and not-so-loyal (I won't spoil that plot twist for ya) to the detective simultaneously.

Christian Convery played Henry, Dee Dee's best friend from grade school who would do anything to impress Sari's daughter...even taking a spoonful of cocaine to do so (of course he spat it out).

Scott Seiss—who did a great job promoting Cocaine Bear on his Twitter account up till the film's theatrical release yesterday—portrayed Tom, a paramedic who, along with his coworker Beth (Kahyun Kim), also had pretty gruesome fates after they came across the bear.

Aaron Holliday, J.B. Moore and Leo Hanna were hilarious as Kid, Vest and Ponytail...a trio of bandits who were a pain in the arse to Ranger Liz even after they got their butts kicked by Daveed inside a public restroom.

Kristofer Hivju and Hannah Hoekstra genially set the tone of the film as Olaf and Elsa, two tourists who were both lucky enough to see a black bear in person for the first time, and also unlucky enough to experience the fury of a black bear that was high on coke.

And not to be forgotten was Matthew Rhys as Andrew Thornton—the real-life drug smuggler in the 1985 incident who set things in motion by dumping all those bags of cocaine out of an airplane onto Georgia's Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest below.

If you've read my previous movie reviews, you'll notice that I didn't really go into detail about all of the characters for those films like I did with the folks in Cocaine Bear...and that's because I waited three months after seeing this flick to express my pleasure in watching this extremely gory but very funny thriller!

From 2015's Pitch Perfect 2 to Cocaine Bear, Elizabeth Banks showed that she is adept at creating satisfying cinematic comedies. (She directed the 2019 action comedy Charlie's Angels as well.) With Cocaine Bear, Banks has demonstrated that she can make a movie that's almost as bloody as what you would see in a film by Quentin Tarantino or Eli Roth...and that's saying a lot!

So two enthusiastic thumbs up for Cocaine Bear! It may be a B-movie, but it provided grade-A entertainment for me at the multiplex.

And not to spoil the ending, but Cocaine Bear lent itself to a sequel. Happy Saturday!

Photo of the Day: Indy Is Back for His 5th Adventure!

Harrison Ford is on set and donning the fedora again for INDIANA JONES 5.
Photo by IJ Adventure Outpost - Twitter.com

Almost two years after he appeared as Han Solo on the big screen for the final time in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Harrison Ford is donning the fedora once again as he began filming Indiana Jones 5. This photo was first posted online yesterday...as principal photography has commenced on the first Indiana Jones film that will not be directed by Steven Spielberg, but by James Mangold (of 2005's Walk the Line, 2017's Logan and 2019's Ford v Ferrari), respectively. Joining Ford in this cast will be Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Mads Mikkelsen, and Solo: A Star Wars Story's Phoebe Waller-Bridge. John Williams is set to return to compose the music score for this latest installment. Indiana Jones 5, which doesn't have a proper title yet, will be released in theaters nationwide on July 29, 2022, hopefully.

And yes, I hope that this sequel will be more along the lines of The Last Crusade (Raiders of the Lost Ark can't be beat) than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! Happy Tuesday.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK Has Received a New Release Date...

Maverick (Tom Cruise) leads a squadron of F/A-18 Hornets across the ocean in TOP GUN: MAVERICK...which hits theaters nationwide on November 19, 2021.

So contrary to this previous Blog entry where I posted that Top Gun: Maverick was supposed to arrive in theaters nationwide on July 2, it will instead be released on November 19 of this year. This is actually great news! I received my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (by Pfizer) a little over a week ago, and I should get my second and last dose on April 21. While the protection by this vaccine would've been at its most potent in the middle of the summer, late November also gives a lot of time for millions of other hopeful moviegoers to get vaccinated before Tom Cruise's much-anticipated air-combat sequel lands in multiplexes everywhere. Herd immunity in the United States should already be taking place by the Thanksgiving holiday...hopefully.

And on another note, Indiana Jones 5 is expected to debut in theaters on July 29, 2022. James Mangold of 2005's Walk the Line, 2007's 3:10 to Yuma and 2017's Logan will direct the film. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who starred in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, will appear alongside Harrison Ford in the fifth Indy flick—while John Williams will return to compose the film's music score, respectively. Happy Friday!

THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Teaser Trailer Is Here!

On an unknown desert world, Rey (Daisy Ridley) prepares to confront Kylo Ren in his TIE Silencer...in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER.

Earlier today, Disney and Lucasfilm revealed the long-awaited title and first trailer to Star Wars: Episode IX at the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago. Now known as The Rise of Skywalker, this ninth and final installment in the Skywalker saga will bring back the biggest villain from the prequel films and original trilogy: Emperor Palpatine himself (who'll once again be played by Ian McDiarmid)! Of course, we obviously don't know if the Sith Formerly Known As Darth Sidious will return as a clone, a Force Ghost, a mere holographic recording on an old Imperial computer, or...as flesh and blood since Palpatine may have actually discovered how to cheat death as mentioned in the story about Darth Plagueis the Wise in Revenge of the Sith. That last one seems unlikely, but it was so cool to hear the Emperor's cackle at the end of this teaser!

An unknown person or creature reassembles Kylo Ren's helmet (which was destroyed by Kylo in THE LAST JEDI)...in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER.

Other notes about the trailer: Rey flipping over Kylo Ren's TIE Silencer is friggin' awesome, it's cool that Kylo's helmet is re-assembled (though I have no issues with him being helmetless like he was in The Last Jedi), BB-8's new sidekick Dio is adorable, there's still no sign of a true B-Wing starfighter in the sequel trilogy (the ski speeders in The Last Jedi don't count) and Lando Calrissian is back! The old-school one portrayed by Billy Dee Williams, not the Danny Glover version who apparently wanted to make love to a droid in Solo: A Star Wars Story. And General Leia lives on!

December 20 can't come soon enough... That is all.

Photos of the Day: DEADPOOL in Hollywood...

Posing with the DEADPOOL costume at ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood...on May 29, 2018.

So yesterday, I drove down to ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood to check out three costumes from Deadpool 2 that were on display in the theater's main lobby. The highlight of the exhibit, of course, was the Deadpool suit worn by Ryan Reynolds himself. To the left of the 'Merc with a Mouth' was the 'Domino' outfit worn by Zazie Beetz, and the 'Bedlam' costume on the right was worn by Terry Crews.

I also went to the ArcLight to see the costumes worn in Solo: A Star Wars Story (which I watched for a second time at AMC Theatre before I made the trip to Hollywood), but sadly, they were nowhere to be seen when I arrived. I guess ArcLight decided to get rid of the exhibit after the not-so-stellar box office gross that Solo earned in its opening weekend. Just jokin'...maybe. Right next to the Deadpool display were the costumes worn in the upcoming Ocean's 8 instead. The necklace shown in the image at the very bottom of this entry was worn by Anne Hathaway in the movie. Carry on.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY - Movie Review

Alden Ehrenreich plays a young Han Solo in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

So yesterday, I watched Solo: A Star Wars Story at a local AMC Theatre, and needless to say, it's a fun new addition to the Star Wars universe! While he's no Harrison Ford, Alden Ehrenreich gave his own interesting take on Han Solo...portraying the character as one who was idealistic, so full of hope, and out to reunite with his long-lost love before turning into the cynical swashbuckling smuggler that we met inside the Mos Eisley cantina in A New Hope. The rest of the cast for Solo was exceptional...with Donald Glover stealing his scenes as a young Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke being both sweet and bad-ass as Qi'ra, Woody Harrelson giving a smooth performance as Solo's mentor Tobias Beckett, Thandie Newton being one tough chick as Val, Paul Bettany being a slimey yet suave gangster as Dryden Vos, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge delightfully playing the rebellious droid L3-37. And of course, let's not forget Joonas Suotamo—whose role as Chewbacca in this movie is the third time he played the Wookie in the Disney-era Star Wars saga (behind The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi). And the fourth time will be the extra charm when he plays Chewie again in next year's Episode IX.

Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) greets Han Solo after being separated from him for three years in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

In regards to the story, screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jonathan were faithful to the origin of Han Solo that Star Wars fans have known for the past three decades or so. As established in the Expanded Universe before it was revamped by Disney a few years ago, Solo was an ex-Imperial officer from Corellia who rescued Chewbacca from the Empire prior to becoming a galactic smuggler...but not before winning the Millennium Falcon in a game of Sabacc from Lando Calrissian. The Kasdans didn't really add anything new to Solo's backstory, except the fact that (Spoilers Ahead) Han got his last name from an Imperial officer on Corellia who recruited him to fight for the Empire. The twist that the Kasdans gave to Solo's history didn't involve him, but the original love of his life, Qi'ra. This plot point has already been spoiled by numerous websites since Solo's release last Thursday, but Qi'ra was not only a romantic interest of Han, but a woman who yearned to rise up the ranks of a criminal organization known as Crimson Dawn. Qi'ra's new boss in this crime syndicate [after she (Spoilers Ahead) eliminated her original superior, Dryden Vos] turned out to be someone who was last seen on the big screen in The Phantom Menace almost 20 years ago. Here's a hint of who he is: He couldn't wait to reveal himself to the Jedi. He couldn't wait to have revenge! Are those good enough clues for ya?

Lando Calrissan (Donald Glover) played a fateful game of Sabacc that cost him the Millennium Falcon in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

In regards to the visual effects in Solo, they looked top-notch...as is expected for a Star Wars movie. That ground battle that Han Solo, Beckett and Val took part in before they deserted the Empire looked intense. The dogfight between the Millennium Falcon and those TIE Fighters near Kessel looked awesome. The droid L3-37, like K-2SO in Rogue One before her, looked photo-realistic. And that firefight between Beckett and his gang, those Ranger Troopers and Enfys Nest's (Erin Kellyman) Marauders aboard the Conveyex train on Vandor was one of the best action sequences in Solo. Music-wise, composer John Powell created his own sweeping score for Ron Howard's film while obviously incorporating memorable tunes from the previous Star Wars installments—such as the Imperial March (of course), the asteroid chase theme from The Empire Strikes Back, the Rebel fanfare and...Duel of the Fates. Yet another hint as to who I'm talking about in the last two sentences in the previous paragraph! And let's not forget that John Williams himself composed the new theme for Han Solo in this movie. Can't wait to listen to it when my Solo soundtrack CD arrives in the mail next week.

Enfys Nest (Erin Kellyman) has a standoff with Han Solo (off-screen) in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

All-in-all, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a nice addition to the Star Wars saga. Before the movie was released, naysayers pointed out that this was a story that didn't really need to be told. While that's somewhat true, the main heist (to steal a form of hyperfuel known as coaxium) that Han and his gang pulled off in Solo was of great importance to the formation of the Rebel Alliance years later, and the revelation of who Qi'ra's new crime boss is at the end of the movie will have major ramifications for future Star Wars films. Even if the First Order is neutralized in Episode IX, Crimson Dawn will be a force (pun intended) to be reckoned with in any Star Wars flick that takes place during Solo's timeline (which is set between Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One, respectively). This new crime boss could also have an effect on the Boba Fett and Obi-Wan films that Lucasfilm is currently plotting out as well. We shall see.

So yea, Solo is a good movie and you should check it out as soon as possible! Happy Memorial Day weekend.

4 out of 5 stars. ****

Image of the Day: A Mandalorian Artwork...

In honor of Boba Fett getting his own Star Wars movie soon, just thought I'd share this artwork that I drew of the Mandalorian Commando 23 years ago...when I was a freshman in high school, and George Lucas recently announced that he was gonna film the prequel trilogy. The Boba Fett spin-off is set to be written and directed by James Mangold, who helmed last year's X-Men flick Logan and such movies as 1999's Girl, Interrupted, 2005's acclaimed Walk the Line and 2007's 3:10 to Yuma (one of my favorite all-time Westerns). Boba Fett, as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi, are two of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars saga who'll get their own films after Episode IX hits theaters in December of next year.

And speaking of another beloved Star Wars character, I can't wait to watch Solo: A Star Wars Story at AMC Theatres tomorrow! I'll post my (hopefully positive) review of it by this Sunday. Happy Friday.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY... The Final Poster and Theatrical Trailer Are Here!

The final theatrical poster for SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

A few hours ago, Disney aired a new preview for Ron Howard's upcoming Star Wars installment during American Idol on ABC TV. The preview—which should appear on the big screen in front of Avengers: Infinity War less than three weeks from now—finally gives us a hint about what the main story will be. Needless to say, it's a heist film, just like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is, but on a smaller, more comedic scale. And I'm diggin' it. The new trailer gave me more confidence that Alden Ehrenreich will do a commendable job impersonating the great Harrison Ford in his take as Han Solo. Donald Glover looks more and more awesome as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke is gorgeous as Qi'Ra, Woody Harrelson will once again play a mentor figure (like he did to Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games franchise)...this time to Solo, and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) definitely looks like he'll get to shine in Solo: A Star Wars Story (compared to the amount of screentime he had in The Last Jedi). And of course, the Millennium Falcon will have its own origin story as well. Can't wait to see how badass Paul Bettany will be as Dryden Vos; ditto with the mysterious Enfys Nest (the actress who plays her hasn't yet been revealed).

Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) inspect the Millennium Falcon in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

There are so many cool images in the new Solo trailer that I couldn't fit most of them here. But why would you want screenshots anyway when I posted the trailer itself at the very bottom of this blog entry? I hope you're as excited for this new Star Wars flick as I am! If not—well, there's also the start of filming for Star Wars: Episode IX to look forward to this summer (in late July, to be exact). That is all.

The SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Super Bowl Ad and Teaser Trailer Are Here!

Alden Ehrenreich plays a young Han Solo in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

After months of speculation as to when Disney would begin promoting its next Star Wars movie after The Last Jedi, the company finally got the ball rolling by showing a 45-second teaser in the first quarter of the Super Bowl yesterday...and the official trailer during ABC TV's Good Morning America this morning. All I can say is...I'm a die-hard Star Wars nut, so of course I would be stoked over the newly-revealed footage!

Han Solo stares up at the Millennium Falcon in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

The only note I have about Solo is Alden Ehrenreich's voice as Han Solo. Definitely not as gruff as that of Harrison Ford... Then again, if you're a fan of the CW TV show Supernatural like I am, you'd notice that the voices of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki (who play Dean and Sam Winchester on the show, respectively) weren't as deep during Season 1 in 2005 as they are this year (in Season 13 of Supernatural). Of course, I'm pretty sure that this comparison probably flew over the heads of most of you reading this entry! It's all good. Just check out these screenshots of Solo's main cast and then the two trailers below. Happy Monday!
